Oscars 2019: Think pink

Feb 19, 2020

All eyes were on the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 24th February as the 91st annual Academy Awards marked the end of 2019’s award season. Stars lined the red carpet as one of the most prestigious events in the fashion calendar, the Oscars, took place.

Last year, red carpet fashion took a back seat as stars turned the carpet black in solidarity with the #MeToo movement but it appears that colour is all the rage, once again, with pink being the shade of the night.

Crazy Rich Asians star Gemma Chan stole the show in a stunning parachute-like candyfloss pink Valentino Couture dress. Paired with muted pink eyeshadow and simple pink lipstick, the taffeta gown featured a high neck, ruffled collar and pockets – filled with cookies and rice cakes, according to Chan. With the dress taken straight from the runway as part of Valentino’s most recent couture collection, Chan’s Bulgari jewellery was the perfect accompaniment.

Dame Helen Mirren reminded the world that ombre is a trend that, when done right, is always a winner. She donned a vibrant pleated Schiaparelli dress, showcasing various shades of pink and completed her outfit with a hot pink clutch bag and added some glitz with her sparkling jewellery.

Kiki Layne kept things sleek and simple in a baby pink custom Versace dress, complete with Atelier Swarovski jewellery. The well fitted gown featured yet another of the go-to trends of the night with a bow-like draped extension at the back.

Jason Momoa and his wife, American actress Lisa Bonet, co-ordinated in matching Fendi ensembles – a tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, who died in February following a battle with pancreatic cancer. Bonet opted for a blush pink embellished tulle dress – one of Lagerfeld’s final haute couture designs. Aquaman star Momoa followed suit, wearing a blush pink velvet suit – a custom design by creative director of menswear Silvia Venturini Fendi – paired with a matching velvet scrunchie on his wrist, complete with the Fendi logo.
Meagan Good channelled her inner-Grecian goddess with her Georges Chakra dress. One of the first to arrive to the ceremony, Good made an impression with the pale pink one-shoulder creation, complete with a plisse train, sheer lace detailing and a thigh high slit.

While pink appeared to be the night’s winning colour, there were plenty of surprises when it came to award winners. Green Book won best picture, while Olivia Colman took home the Oscar for best actress and Rami Malek scooped up the award for best actor following his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody
